Dear Brodhead School District Residents,

At the January 8, 2025 meeting, the School Board voted to place an operational referendum question on the ballot for April 1, 2025. This referendum question represents a request from the School District of Brodhead for additional funding to maintain our current programs and facilities. This referendum would replace the current operational referendum expiring in June of 2025.

We believe a strong and balanced education is vital to the future of our children, and a strong school system is a key part of a healthy community. We present this referendum to keep our current programs and facilities at a level of quality to which the community has come to expect. State-imposed revenue caps continue to limit our budget options such that we are continuously faced with the tough decision related to staffing, programs, and facility needs. We believe this referendum, which will simply replace the current three-year referendum with no tax rate increase from current year levels, fosters the best interests of our children, while at the same time enhancing the overall well-being of the community.

Sincerely, The Brodhead School Board

Why can’t the District fund these expenses with the current budget?

The State-allowed increases to the District’s revenue limit have not kept up with the cost of inflation, meaning that even maintaining the current level of services required the District to operate at a deficit.

87% of all school districts in Wisconsin, and every district in Green County, have utilized an operating referendum. This speaks to the importance of this process in funding schools in the State.
